SP3 - Health

SP3 links anonymized emergency service data with high-resolution climate and structural data to identify and predict heat-related health risks, particularly vulnerable groups, and future emergency events under climate change scenarios.

SP3 investigates how climate affects population health. For this purpose, anonymized emergency medical service (EMS) data from the Hannover region, the City of Hannover, and the City of Braunschweig will be analyzed. The EMS systems in these areas cover emergency care for approximately 1.4 million residents and record around 315,000 incidents per year.
Within the project, time- and geo-coded data on medical emergencies will be linked with high-resolution climate, environmental, and structural data to identify climate-related health risks at the population level.

Our main objectives are to:

  • Identify and characterize heat-related health emergencies
  • Detect low- and high-risk urban heat event zones, considering microclimatic and socio-structural factors
  • Identify particularly vulnerable population groups
  • Develop, in collaboration with SP1 and GEO-NET Umweltconsulting GmbH, machine learning models to predict health emergencies under current and future climate scenarios, thereby contributing to the structural development of emergency medical services.

The results will provide geospatial risk matrices that map health events, demographic characteristics, and microclimatic conditions. These findings will support emergency services as well as municipalities, urban planners, and public health authorities in allocating resources more effectively during extreme weather events and in developing evidence-based prevention strategies.
