UMEX-HOPE
Support cities and municipalities in developing holistic climate adaptation strategies
The main objective of UMEX-HOPE is to support cities and municipalities in developing
holistic climate adaptation strategies that go beyond existing planning tools.
At the core of the project lies an in-depth understanding of the nexus between urban microclimate and ecosystems, explored from multiple scientific perspectives.
UMEX-HOPE follows an interdisciplinary approach, integrating microscale climate simulations, field measurements, ecological landscape analyses, and health data to investigate how the microclimate affects human health. The project also focuses on trade-offs between adaptation measures, such as increasing green and blue infrastructure, and potential health risks, for instance, the spread of mosquito-borne diseases.
A key outcome will be the development of spatial risk maps identifying potential health hazards. The project will be supported by a publicly accessible web-based dashboard, designed to enhance urban planning decisions through real-time data and risk analyses. This dashboard will also inform real-time eHealth warning systems, thereby contributing to active public health protection. In addition, climate change projections will provide further insights into how adaptation measures may influence urbanized ecosystems in the future.
UMEX-HOPE will focus on the following key research areas:
- Health risks related to heat stress and air pollution in indoor and outdoor environments
- Allergy risks associated with airborne pollen
- Risks to humans and animals from infectious diseases transmitted by native and invasive mosquito species
