Zine 02, “Resilience as Governance,” presents another progress report from the OpenCultures Climate and Future Lab. The publication emerged from an exploration of the concept of “resilience” within SubLab 3 OpenImaginaries and should be understood as a work in progress.

A central thesis is that resilience can be conceived not only as a calculable and measurable quantity but also in a governmental sense. Furthermore, using the climate crisis as an example, the zine offers initial insights into how resilience is addressed culturally and in the media, and with what effects.

Moving forward, a bridge is built to architecture and “elastic spaces” (see Zine 01). Initial steps involve analyzing the extent to which architecture can be understood as a resilience-oriented problematization and, at the same time, as a medium for the self-understanding of culture and society.

Building on this, the project will subsequently examine how these problematizations and self-understandings can be illuminated from a cultural studies perspective. The goal is to introduce additional questions and perspectives into the discourse that have been less prominent thus far.

In particular, design principles will be examined from various perspectives in the future in order to help shape innovative, inclusive, and as equitable as possible planning and implementation processes.
